Pamela Davis

MPP '87

Pamela E. Davis is the founder, President and CEO of the member companies of the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance, which includes the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance of California (NIAC); Alliance of Nonprofits Insurance, Risk Retention Group (ANI); the National Alliance of Nonprofits for Insurance (NANI), a reinsurer; and Alliance Member Services (AMS) a nonprofit supporting organization.

Ms. Davis founded this group as a result of the liability insurance crisis in the mid-1980s when many nonprofits in California and elsewhere could not obtain insurance at any price. This problem was addressed in Ms. Davis' APA.

The following is an excerpt from testimony by Pamela Davis before the California Assembly in 1987:

"Between 1984 and 1986, general liability insurance premiums increased 200 percent or more for one out of four charitable nonprofit organizations in California. During that same period, insurance companies canceled or refused to renew the general liability policies of one out of five California charitable nonprofits. Some important human service programs, such as childcare, foster care, group homes and health service were forced to dramatically cut services or close because they couldn't find affordable insurance."

Together, all of the companies now insure and provide risk management services for more than 20,000 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofits in 32 states and the District of Columbia. They write more than $150 million in premium and have more than $500 million in assets.  All companies in the group are 501(c)(3) nonprofits themselves. Ms. Davis has testified three times before Congress, in 1993, 2017 and 2019 regarding the difficulties community-based nonprofits have obtaining liability and property insurance. She is also President of American Nonprofits, whose mission is to increase nonprofits’ access to credit and financial expertise.

In 2017 she was named among 125 Elite Women by Insurance Business America as one of the women at the vanguard of the insurance industry. In 2013, the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance was selected as one of The Bay Area News Group’s Top Workplaces. In 2010, Ms. Davis and the Nonprofits Insurance Alliance were featured in the first “sequel” of the documentary series Visionaries which airs on PBS stations nationwide. In 2008, Ms. Davis was named a “Women of Influence in Silicon Valley” by the Silicon Valley/San Jose Business Journal. In 2006, Ms. Davis was named by Business Insurance as one of the “Women to Watch” in the commercial insurance industry worldwide. She was named one of the nation’s 15 BEST BOSSES by Fortune Small Business and Winning Workplaces in 2005 in recognition of innovative and progressive leadership in establishing a great workplace.
