CCDE Program

Mission: The Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement focuses on preparing current and future leaders to successfully engage people of diverse perspectives in finding solutions for pressing public policy issues.

Founded by the Class of '68 and led by Dan Lindheim, faculty director, Larry A. Rosenthal, program director, and Robert B. Reich, senior fellow, the Center supports program strategies, activities and events on the UC Berkeley campus and beyond, including:

  1. Research into understanding the factors that enable productive problem solving including issues of conflict, civility, and democratic engagement.
  2. Teaching based on research that equips students with skills in collaborative leadership and consensus-building.
  3. Fellowships for Goldman School graduate students’ public policy projects and for undergraduate UC Washington Center students to prepare leaders to implement effective public policy solutions.
  4. Public Events on topical issues that demonstrate the importance of civil discussions between people of diverse points of view for addressing public policy challenges and building democratic engagement.
