Melvin Greer

Senior Policy Advisor to the Dean

Dr. Melvin Greer is Intel Fellow and Chief Data Scientist for U.S. Enterprise, Intel Corporation.

As an Intel Fellow, Greer has achieved the company’s pre-eminent technical distinction, granted in recognition of outstanding and sustained technical achievements and leadership in engineering, programming, services, science, design, and technology. As Chief Data Scientist, Greer is focused on the application of advanced mathematics, graph analytics, machine learning, and blockchain zero trust models to accelerate the transformation of data into a strategic asset for federal agencies and global enterprises. He provides technical expertise on data science concepts and inspires the adoption of advanced analytics and data governance across critical use cases of health and life science, retail, threat intelligence, financial services, energy and transportation.

Greer's systems and software engineering experience has resulted in patented inventions in cloud computing, synthetic biology and IoT bio-sensors for edge analytics. He functions as a principal investigator in advanced research studies, including nanotechnology, additive manufacturing, and gamification. He significantly advances the body of knowledge in basic research and critical, highly advanced engineering and scientific disciplines.

Greer is a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and is on the board of directors for the U.S. National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine. He has been appointed as senior advisor and fellow at the IT and data division of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He is charged with the acceleration of the FBI's mission by supporting appropriate data collection, data analytics, discovery, and visualization via advanced data science and AI techniques.

Greer is one of the 2018 LinkedIn Top 10 Voices in data science and analytics. He also received the Washington Exec inaugural Pinnacle Award as the 2018 Artificial Intelligence Executive of the Year. He received the 2017 BDPA Lifetime Achievement Award and the 2012 BEYA Technologist of the Year Award, which recognize his outstanding technical contributions that have had a material impact and high value to society as a whole.

Greer has been appointed fellow of the National Cybersecurity Institute where he assists government, industry, military, and academic sectors in meeting the challenges in cyber security policy, technology, and education. Greer is a professor in the Master of Science in Data Science program at Southern Methodist University (SMU) and adjunct faculty at Johns Hopkins University, where he teaches the Masters of Science course “Practical Applications of Artificial Intelligence”.

In addition to his professional and investment roles, Greer is Founder and Managing Director of the Greer Institute for Leadership and Innovation, which is focused on research and deployment of a 21st Century Leadership Model. Greer is a frequent speaker at conferences and universities and is an accomplished author; his fifth and most recently published book is Practical Cloud Security: A Cross Industry View.

As a popular educator and board member at a number of Historical Black Colleges and Universities, Greer is leading science, technology, mathematical, and engineering (STEM) research initiatives, directly trying to shape a more diverse generation of up-and-coming technical talent.
