With the start of a new year, it’s never too early to begin thinking about what you can do to prepare for graduate school. The following are three important steps that one should take to be ready and ensure graduate school success.
Step #1: Evaluate goals and research programs
We strongly encourage applicants to take time to determine if the MPP is the right fit. Our admissions committee seeks to admit the very best, brightest, and most diverse applicants who are unequivocally ready and have set the MPP as their #1 educational goal. Graduate school should not be a second or third option as it is a full-time investment requiring significant time, energy, and financial resources. Therefore, applicants should take time to think deeply about what motivates and inspires them to pursue an MPP degree. Consider what kind of impact you want to have in the world, and how is an MPP degree going to help you achieve your professional goals? Are you excited and ready for the rigorous academic training? Does your academic background and experience showcase your commitment to the field of public policy? If not, then how can you articulate or gain the experience and background to be a competitive applicant? Your answers to these questions will help you determine if the MPP is the right fit for you, and they should also prompt you to conduct further research on our program.

Step #2: Develop an action plan and timeline
If you decide that the MPP is your top educational goal, then the next step is to come up with an organized action plan and timeline for your graduate school application. Your plan should include ample time to prepare stellar essays, prep for the GRE and/or TOEFL exam, identify the most relevant recommendors, and attend a Fall 2013 GSPP admissions information session prior to applying. By planning effectively and meeting your timeline goals, you will have a greater chance of producing a high quality admissions application.
Step #3: Enjoy the process of applying
The final step is to enjoy the process of applying to graduate school. Investing in yourself should be a great experience, and you should feel excited and energized to take the bold step of applying to graduate school. Enjoy the process of applying, and take time now to prepare for your future!
