What attracted you to GSPP?

Initially, I was interested in GSPP because of the respect I had for UC-Berkeley as a premier public research university. After learning more about the Goldman School specifically, I was intrigued by the focus of the curriculum on developing quantitative analytical skills and the strong sense of community that the school fosters. Location was also a significant factor as I preferred to stay in the Bay Area for graduate school.

Why I Chose Goldman

Jonathan Peterson, MPP '15

Jonathan Peterson is a first-year MPP student at the Goldman School of Public Policy.

My answer to the question why I came to Goldman changes quite regularly. Sometimes, I invoke the professional answer. I came to Goldman for the analytical/quantitative toolkit that will help me become a more nimble, and hopefully more employable person.  Occasionally, you will get the policy answer. I want to change the course of public education, make higher educational institutions more accessible and affordable. You may also get the educational response. I love teaching and I love being in classrooms.  Lectures bring a smile to my face and seeing how educational institutions function is what fascinates me more than anything else. Or, you may get the vacation response. I wanted to take a break from professional life and be a student one last time, network with new people and become inspired by students who have a passion for solving public problems.

I bring up my various answers to this question because I hope that if you are a prospective student, you are asking yourself how spending two years at Goldman will transform your own path. My answer changes because every day at Goldman seems a little bt different. I have so many answers to the question of why I came to Goldman because what I am learning is changing not only my skills, but also my perspective on how to best change the world. Perhaps my ruminations on the question of why I came to GSPP will serve to help you determine whether spending two years in a humble frat house will alter your own personal trajectory and hopefully make you a more well-rounded person along the way...read more

Francesca Delgado, MPP '15

Throughout the year, GSPP welcomes prospective students to campus to meet with current MPP students. They are the best on-the-ground resource for questions about electives, housing, and quality of life in the Bay Area. Not everyone can make the visit out to beautiful Berkeley, so we're bringing a current student to you! Prospective students, meet Francesca Delgado.

Year:  First

Policy Area of Concentration:  Social Policy

GSPP Graduation Year: 2015

Undergraduate School: Washington State University

Personal History: Before coming to GSPP, I worked as a probation officer in Seattle, Washington. It was a balance of protecting the community and facilitating the reintegration of offenders into society. It was this experience of providing direct services that motivated me to go to graduate school and work on the issues that can help turn people’s lives around. In my spare time, I enjoy volunteering with youth. As a program manager of a high school girls program, I helped create and facilitate monthly workshops on topics such as college prep, self-image, and healthy communication. As an undergraduate student, I majored in Political Science and had internships as a campaign scheduler for a Seattle mayoral campaign and as a legislative aide in Washington, D.C. for U.S. Senator Patty Murray.

Why I Chose Goldman

Ignacio Camacho, MPP '15

Ignacio Camacho is a first-year MPP student at the Goldman School of Public Policy, originally from Mexico City.

If you also want to change the world, this is your place!

When I was leaving my hometown to go back to school after four years, I did not have high expectations. I had become cynical and had ceased to believe that education could provide me with new tools to improve policy making. I was tired of being looked at as a naive day-dreamer who actually wanted to… Change the world?

GSPP altered everything...read more
