MPP and MPP/Concurrent Application Deadline for Fall 2024 Admission: December 4, 2023 at 8:59 PST.

Please review the following application instructions on this page. The MPP specific instructions listed here supersede the general instructions from the online application.

Concurrent Degree Programs Offered:

All concurrent degree applicants must meet the same requirements as single degree MPP applicants with regard to submitting a Resume, Policy Statement of Purpose, Personal History Statement, Transcripts, Letters of Recommendation and official standardized test scores. Please contact the degree partner program for any additional information or materials that they may require for the concurrent degree application.

Each program will apply the same admissions requirements as used for students not seeking the concurrent degree. It is possible to be admitted to one program and not the other. In this case, the applicant will have the choice of pursuing the single degree program.

To select your concurrent degree program of choice on the on-line application, go to the "Application Instructions" page and scroll to the end of the "Select Program" drop-down menu.

Public Policy & Law

For the MPP/JD degree, applicants must fill out separate applications for the MPP program and the JD program. Applicants interested in applying to the MPP/JD should submit an MPP application through UC Berkeley’s Graduate Division. JD applications must be submitted through LSAC (Law School Admission Council - https://www.lsac.org/).

Please contact Berkeley Law J.D. Admissions for detailed instructions about their admissions process and application requirements.

Neither the Goldman School of Public Policy nor Berkeley Law require or even recommend any specific undergraduate major. Applicants with varied backgrounds and training enhance and enrich the educational experience of all students.

Prospective students in a position to structure their curricula might do the following: develop skills in communication, both written and verbal, take courses in which written work is vigorously edited; develop analytical and problem-solving skills; obtain breadth in humanities and social sciences in order to understand the social context within which legal problems arise; and acquire a general understanding of economics because a significant number of legal problems are related to the economic functioning of the society. In selecting specific courses, consultation with an undergraduate adviser may be desirable.

Public Policy & Engineering

If you are applying to a concurrent program with a department offering a one-year MS degree, you must apply and be accepted to that concurrent degree program during the initial admissions cycle in order to save a year of study and complete the degree in two years. If you are not admitted to one of the two degree programs in the initial admissions cycle, you can still apply to the other program during the Fall semester of your first year of enrollment in the master’s program, however, you will be unable to complete the concurrent degree program in two years due to the course sequence and requirements.

Successful candidates will ideally have an academic record that roughly includes at least six courses in liberal arts and humanities (literature, language, philosophy, the fine arts, history, etc.; in any combination); and six courses in social sciences (anthropology, economics, ethnic studies, geography, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, sociology, etc.; in any combination).
