Dennis O’Connor

Degree Received:
MD, The George Washington University School of Medicine
MPH, The George Washington University School of Public Health
BS, Oakland University

Most recent position:
Emergency Medicine Physician, Paradise Valley Hospital

Prior Experience
“After serving as an Emergency Medicine Physician and Shock Trauma Platoon leader in the United States Navy I have been in private practice in San Diego, California.”

Why I Chose UC Berkeley’s MPA Program
“The flexible format for both in-person and online coursework, as well as my experience as an Emergency Medicine Physician, has been a central factor in the motivation to pursue a Master of Public Affairs.

As a physician, my daily clinical duties highlight issues such as affordable access to health care, prescription drug coverage for vulnerable populations, and the role of Federal and State Government in the practice of medicine. Management and policy development were never specific areas of training for me, but I now have the opportunity to learn these skills since they are used frequently in my field of work. The skills I learn during the MPA program will make me a much better administrator for disaster and relief efforts as well as quality improvement in the Hospital Emergency Room.”

After Graduation
“After graduating with my MPA degree I will have strengthened my skillsets in logistical, analytical, and organizational leadership planning. By combining these skills with my clinical experience in the Emergency Room, I plan to focus my ongoing career on Health Policy concentrating on providing quality healthcare to everyone in the United States, humanitarian disaster relief, as well as operational medicine and casualty evacuation.”
