Evan White (MPP/JD ’12)

Executive Director, California Policy Lab (Berkeley, CA)

Evan White

Biography

Evan White is the Executive Director for the California Policy Lab (CPL) at UC Berkeley, which was recently launched to create close working partnerships between researchers and government policy makers to help evaluate public programs through rigorous scientific research, technical assistance, and the infrastructure to safely and securely merge large sets of administrative data.

Prior to joining CPL, Evan was a Senior Advisor to the Director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau in Washington DC, where he worked on a wide portfolio of issues, including auto and student lending, debt collection, anti-discrimination, deposits and overdraft, financial education and empowerment, arbitration, and fintech. Before holding that position, he served as a Brandeis Honors Attorney in CFPB’s Offices of Fair Lending and Regulations.

While completing a joint degree in Law and Public Policy at UC Berkeley, Evan clerked for the Civil Rights Division of the Department of Justice, the Housing Branch of the White House Office of Management and Budget, and California Supreme Court Justice Carlos Moreno. He was a teaching assistant to Professor and former Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, a research assistant to Professor and former law-school Dean Jesse Choper, and Senior Publishing Editor of the California Law Review. Evan has worked as a consultant for PolicyLink, the National Housing Law Project, the Berkeley Housing Department, and OMB.

Before graduate school, Evan was the Fair Housing Director of Project Sentinel, northern California’s largest fair housing nonprofit. During his tenure, the agency obtained the largest settlement in its history and revolutionized its approach to internet-based discrimination.
