Executive and International Programs
e-Government Workshop
EIP Presents: “Cyberlife: The Interaction of Policy and Technological Innovation in the Information Age”
The Program
Today the world is in the midst of the greatest period of technological innovation in centuries. UC Berkeley professors and policy practitioners will introduce participants to new ideas and perspectives about the interaction of policy and information technology. The program is designed to foster active participation and to provoke insightful discussion and debate on how information technology is transforming our organizational and institutional structures and processes.
Information technologies are changing our models of the corporation, education, civil society and government. These new virtual social forums often transcend political borders, disseminating knowledge rapidly around the world through electronic means. However, issues such as privacy and educational opportunity are of increasing concern to both citizens and governments. Therefore, we need to explore what new kinds of institutions and regulations must be developed in order to tackle the challenges of this revolution in communications systems.
Participants in this program will learn about the organization and dynamics of the digital economy in the stimulating intellectual environment of UC Berkeley, California’s premier public institution of higher education. Productivity advances and successive waves of innovation will generate enduring economic gains as well as social transformations. The purpose of this executive workshop is to explore how government can manage this process of innovation-- and how technology can improve the process of governance itself.
This program will address issues such as:
- ACCESS: How can government provide better information to citizens and industries?
- EFFICIENCY: Can e-commerce techniques lower the cost of government, and be used to improve the quality of customer services?
- TRANSPARENCY: How can it "open up" decision making processes to the public? What is the right balance between transparency and efficiency?
- COOPERATION: How can it improve communications between government agencies, enhancing coordination?
- PARTICIPATION: How well does the Internet function as a medium of participation in government?
