How to Apply
The online application includes a multiple part, personal statement section. Complete this first before you begin the online application, then you can copy and paste into the online application form.
Personal Statement:
Part I: Please prepare a statement of up to 2 double-spaced pages describing:
- your public service career goals
- how your background has influenced those goals – you may include family, community, education, obstacles that you have overcome and other relevant life and work experiences
- how participating in a PPIA Junior Summer Institute will help you achieve those goals
Part II: Please prepare a brief statement, approximately a ½ page, double-spaced, answering the following:
- The PPIA Junior Summer Institutes strive to cultivate the development of future leaders equipped to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds in a multicultural society. What experiences will you bring to this program that will enable your fellow participants to have a fuller understanding of your commitment to public service, cross-cultural and social issues?
Part III: Please prepare a brief statement, approximately 1 page, double-spaced, about the following:
- Your experience working with diverse communities, particularly African-Americans, Asian-Americans, Latino/as, Native Americans and Pacific Islanders.
Part IV:
To apply for the UCPPIA Law Fellowship you must first submit the online PPIA application with Berkeley as one of your choices. After submitting your application online, you will receive a confirmation email that will give you the option of submitting the following additional essay:
Please prepare a brief statement, approximately 1 page, double-spaced, about the following:
- Your interests for wanting to pursue joint degrees in law and public policy, what skills you would be seeking to acquire and how you will apply such skills to further your public service career goals.
Online Application:
To apply online, please visit http://www.ppiaprogram.org/app/.
- You may submit application ONLY ONCE, so take your time, carefully follow instructions and complete accurately. During this process you can also choose to submit your application to other JSI in addition to UC Berkeley.
- Once you submit the online application you will receive a confirmation email with instructions for submitting the following supplementary application materials
- A current copy of your resume
- Two letters of recommendation (one recommendation letter that speaks to your academic capabilities and one that speaks to your community involvement, preferably from a supervisor)
- Official academic transcript(s)
- Student Aid Report (SAR) and a copy of your financial aid award letter for 2007-2008 or parent/guardian’s tax forms if you are not receiving financial aid
- Optional: To be eligible for selection as a UCPPIA Law Fellow, please submit a brief statement, approximately 1 page, double-spaced, explaining:
Your interests for wanting to pursue joint degrees in law and public policy, what skills you would be seeking to acquire and how you will apply such skills to further your public service career goals.
- The above supplemental information must be sent to UC Berkeley and to each of the JSI you selected on your application. Each JSI mailing address will be included in your confirmation email
- Online application form and ALL supplemental materials should be received or postmarked by November 1, 2008.
