"The Goldman School is deeply saddened at the November 19, 2011 passing away of Professor I. Michael Heyman, a longstanding member of the School’s Board of Advisers, and a prominent proponent of the use of public policy analysis as a tool for solving problems and advancing the public interest.
Professor Heyman forged deep ties to the University of California at Berkeley over fifty-two years as Law Professor, as Chancellor from 1980 to 1990, and later on as professor emeritus of Law and of City and Regional Planning. From the start of his tenure as Chancellor he was known as a champion of diversity and was recognized for his political courage. Professor Heyman’s storied career also included five years in Washington D.C. as the head of the Smithsonian. Among the many contributions Professor Heyman made to both institutions was his recognition of their increasing need for private support, and he worked to create highly successful fundraising efforts in both places. At the Goldman School, Professor Heyman was a ready fundraiser and a trusted adviser over four dean-ships. We will sorely miss his advice and his friendship.
Goldman School Professor David Kirp has made a generous gift to establish a graduate student fellowship support fund in memory of Professor Heyman. If you would like to join Professor Kirp in honoring Professor Heyman in this way, please contact Annette Doornbos at 510-642-8005 or doornbos@berkeley.edu or make a gift online here."
