Cal Class of ‘68

Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement

Advancing an engaged citizenry in a diverse society

From its home in the Goldman School of Public Policy, the Cal Class of ‘68 Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement will extend the historic legacy of the Class of ’68 and advance its aspirations and spirit of civility. Partnering with the Goldman School, the Class of ’68 Center will study and promote the practices of civility on which democracy and good policy-making depend.

The Class of ’68 Center on Civility & Democratic Engagement will sponsor large-scale and small-group events that offer opportunities to share knowledge and diverse perspectives on complex, topical issues. Center events will promote open-minded and productive exchanges about timely and controversial problems facing societies today.

Through its partnership with UC Berkeley’s Goldman School, the Class of ’68 Center will support state and national student internships. As they work in both traditional and nontraditional public sector settings, students will reflect on the challenges of developing consensus through civil discourse in a high-stakes political environment.

Academic leadership of the Class of ’68 Center will draw on UC Berkeley’s distinguished faculty -Goldman School Professors Robert Reich and Henry Brady and UC Berkeley Heller Professor of Political Science and Director of the UC Washington Center, Washington, D.C., Bruce Cain.

With our support, the Class of ’68 Center will:

  • Sponsor topical events featuring speakers of diverse socio-political persuasions. These events will stimulate interest in democratic participation and exemplify productive engagement. Civility will be practiced in the face of diverse, deeply held perspectives on controversial subjects.
  • Support student internships that offer the next generation’s leaders first-hand experience with democratic processes. Associated instruction will equip student with the approaches and techniques that promote productive engagement.

As its endowment and academic portfolio grow, the Class of ’68 Center will promote research and publication that add to our society’s understanding of civility and democratic engagement.

Our gifts will launch the Class of ‘68 Center and its partnership with UC Berkeley’s top-ranked Goldman School. The Center will be a tangible celebration of our 40th reunion and a sustaining bequest to Cal. Fundraising is underway in preparation of the Center’s fall 2008 launch.
