David Kirp talked about his book, Improbable Scholars: The Rebirth of a Great American School System and a Strategy for America’s Schools, in which he profiles the Union City, New Jersey public school system. In his book, the author reports that Union City, once one of the worst school systems in the state, now graduates ninety percent of its high school students and sixty percent of them go to college. Mr. Kirp argued that these gains have been achieved by an emphasis on early education, support of teachers, and outreach to parents. Mr. Kirp spoke at Union City High School in Union City, New Jersey.
